Mayday Recognition

3 Hours – Lecture & Practical
Designed to educate the firefighter on how to recognize emergency situations and get the help needed to mitigate the situation. Students will be able to determine the difference between Mayday vs. Urgent messages and the proper uses of both.

Fire Ground Survival

8 Hours – Practical
Students will learn to identify situations that cause firefighters to be injured or killed in the line of duty, how to take measures to avoid these situations, and learn self-survival procedures. Techniques learned will be situational awareness, mayday transmissions, dis-entanglement, window egress, & SCBA confidence. Program can be delivered in an acquired structure and/or with the use of S&ST’s mobile training simulators.

Personal Harness Use

4 or 8 Hours – Lecture & Practical
Program shall be focused on the use of the Class II fire service personal harness. This class will teach the students the necessary skills to utilize the personal harness to rescue civilians, other firefighters, and ultimately themselves. They will also be shown the incorporation of the personal escape system with the harness for future advancements. Students will conduct practical skills sessions to include upper floor egress, vertical lowers, and firefighter rescue.

Personal Escape System Operations

6 Hours – Lecture & Practical
S&ST will provide an informational session on all the personal harness & escape systems available for purchase in the fire service. Students will be provided the opportunity to utilize all the various harness & systems options to help determine which best fits their needs.

Personal Escape Systems

End User   8 Hours – Lecture & Practical
The personal escape system authorized end user program will educate the firefighter on the proper use & deployment of the personal escape system. Other areas of education will include situations warranting use, anchor options, packing, & deployment techniques. Training can be delivered with the use of the S&ST mobile training simulator, acquired structure and/or at a fixed training facility.

Advanced Use   4 or 8 Hours – Lecture & Practical
The personal escape system authorized end user program will educate the firefighter on the additional uses of the personal escape system expanding upon the required end-user program. This is an all practical program that will include advanced situations of use for multiple firefighter egress, egress from elevated situations to lower floors & roofs, use of the personal escape system for firefighter rescue, egress to aerial ladders, etc.

Refresher Use   4 Hours –  Practical
This refresher program is intended to reinforce previously learned skills and techniques with regards to the deployment of the members personal escape system. Members will be put through simulated situations requiring them to display proficiency in the use of their personal escape system.

Tactical Use   8 Hours –  Lecture &Practical
The Tactical Use personal escape system train-the-trainer program will educate the firefighter/department instructor on the proper use and instructional process of their personal escape system. Other areas of education will include situations warranting use, anchor options, packing, & deployment techniques. Instructional techniques will include safety procedures, belay set-up’s, trouble shooting, and teaching skills. The training will be delivered over 2-3 days held at the department’s facility of choice, acquired structure or with the use of the S&ST mobile training simulator. Completion of this training will only authorize department instructors to deliver the training to their respective department, not other agencies.

Train The Trainer  16 or 24 Hours –  Lecture &Practical
The personal escape system train-the-trainer program will educate the firefighter/department instructor on the proper use and instructional process of their personal escape system. Instructional techniques will include safety procedures, belay set-up’s, trouble shooting, and teaching skills. Firefighter Escape Options

4 or 8 Hours – Lecture & Practical
Any firefighter engaging in fire ground operations must have a solid foundation developed in emergency escape procedures. In a split second conditions can change forcing firefighters to revert to their secondary egress when their primary egress becomes cut-off. This program will cover the several options that firefighters can utilize to safely egress upper floor entrapments.  The program starts with a lecture session on case study situations and methods of avoiding an escape procedure followed by a practical session. Techniques from simple to enhanced such as the hang and drop, ladder slide, body wrap, along with the adaption of the personal escape system will be covered. Students will be placed in various simulated emergency situations requiring them to utilize these emergency techniques. Firefighters attending will leave with an increased knowledge of fire ground safety and self-rescue options.

Smoke Recognition

3 Hours – Lecture
This 3 hour lecture based session on Smoke Recognition will discuss all the critical behaviors of smoke and fire on the fire ground. All firefighters should have an understanding on how to recognize these rapidly changing conditions to avert any injury or fatality that can occur. The program is a video driven class with student interaction to get everyone to think outside the box.

Vacant Building Operations

3 Hours – Lecture
This class on Vacant Building Operations will give the student an in depth look into the hazards and operational considerations while fighting fires in vacant buildings. Roles and responsibilities of both the engine and ladder companies will be covered in this 3 hour interactive lecture. Types of construction most commonly associated with these buildings and how to develop pre-planning for them will also be discussed.

Effective Search Procedures

3 or 8 Hours – Lecture & Practical
Program shall consist of critical fire ground skills in the regards to search procedures. Various search techniques for residential and commercial buildings will be covered. Focus will be made on residential search procedures, vent enter search operations, commercial search rope procedures and RIC search.

Hazard Recognition

3 Hours – Lecture 
The Hazard Recognition program is designed to deliver the student skills on recognizing the changing of interior fire conditions to prevent possible injury or entrapment. Critical fire ground size-up techniques for interior firefighting operations will include fire behavior, smoke recognition, building construction, situational awareness, mayday/urgent message transmissions, and self-rescue procedures. A case study review on the FDNY Black Sunday incident will also be delivered during the program.
